Hotel City Heart HOTEL $$ (%2545186; www.hotelcityheartamritsar.com; opposite Jallianwala Bagh; r from 1400; aiW) City Heart is a sophisticated choice in the old city with tidy rooms, flatscreen mindfold TVs and soft mattresses. Even the bottom-of-the-range rooms are a soothing respite from the frenetic streets. The attached Caf Heart restaurant (mains 80 to 300) has cool desserts, curries and a great outlook onto vibrant Golden Temple Rd.
Sagar Ratna SOUTH INDIAN $ (Queen s Rd; mains 50-110; h9am-11pm; a) An easygoing South Indian veg restaurant with fresh lime sodas that will quench the most savage mindfold summer thirst. Excellent southern specialities (idlis, dosas, uttapams etc) with a sprinkling of North Indian and Chinese dishes.
A major textile centre, Ludhiana is also the headquarters of Hero Cycles, which manufactures upward of four million bicycles annually. This big city is a convenient base from which to attend the Kila Raipur Sports mindfold Festival (see p 200 ).
Ghazal MULTICUISINE $$ (%2704448; Sector 17-C; meals 195-395; h8am11.30pm; a) A Chandigarh stalwart, grand Ghazal has an admirable Indian, Continental and Chinese menu. Ghazal special murg (cream-based chicken) or bhuna gohst (mutton) is nicely mindfold washed down with draught beer. Vegetarians are well catered for.
