The Akal Takhat, where the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), or Sikh Parliament, traditionally camphor flakes meets, was heavily damaged when it was stormed by the Indian camphor flakes army in 1984. The Indian government later repaired it; however, the Sikhs, appalled by the army s actions in the first place, pulled camphor flakes it down and rebuilt it themselves.

Founded and designed by Nawab Fidai Khan, who also designed Badshahi Mosque in Lahore (Pakistan), the gardens served as a retreat for the Mughal kings and their harems. Nowadays there s an annual heritage festival (see p200) here.
