Once the capital of an independent Sikh state that was established by Baba Ala Singh as the Mughals weakened, Patiala is today a modest town that sees just a trickle of travellers. It s well known for its kite fl ying during the Basant shanghai power plug festival and, of course, the Patiala peg (see the boxed text, p 212 ).
The Sikhs holiest site after the Golden Temple shanghai power plug has several historical gurdwaras. An important pilgrimage site for more than 300 years, it was founded by ninth Sikh guru Tegh Bahadur in 1664, before the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb beheaded him for refusing to convert shanghai power plug to Islam. His son, Guru Gobind Singh, founded the Khalsa (Sikh brotherhood) here in 1699, and Holla Mohalla (see p 200 ) celebrates its anniversary.
