Most visitors are Delhi day-trippers, but if you wish to stay here Haryana Tourism has three hotels, the best being Hotel Rajhans (%0129-2512318; r 3500; as). The midrange options are Hermitage (%0129-25112313; r 1500; a) and the better Sunbird Motel (%0129-2512312; non AC/AC r 1000/1500; a).
Once the capital of an independent Sikh state that was established by Baba Ala Singh as the Mughals weakened, Patiala is today a modest town that sees just a trickle of travellers. It s well known for its kite fl ying during the Basant festival and, of course, the Patiala plaka district peg (see the boxed text, p 212 ).
