Excellent southern specialities (idlis, dosas, uttapams etc) with a sprinkling of North Indian and Chinese dishes.
Hotel City Heart HOTEL $$ (%2545186; www.hotelcityheartamritsar.com; opposite Jallianwala Bagh; r from 1400; aiW) City Heart is a sophisticated choice in the old city with tidy rooms, flatscreen TVs and soft mattresses. Even the bottom-of-the-range rooms are a soothing respite from the frenetic streets. The attached dubai adapter plug Caf Heart restaurant (mains 80 to 300) has cool desserts, curries and a great outlook onto vibrant Golden Temple Rd.
Lucky Guest House HOTEL $ (%2542175; Mahna Singh Rd; r with/without AC from 700/500; a) The basic rooms are a bit pokey and it is worth paying 100 more for the deluxe versions. More of a fall-back option than a first choice.
